General Safety rules and regulations in the workshop

GENERAL SAFETY RULES AND REGULATIONS IN THE WORKSHOP

1) Never work alone in the workshop, work at least in pairs. This is so because in case of industrial/workshop accident the other partner will be a helper (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) it’s all about Teamwork.

Electrical Accidents, Causes and Precautions

ELECTRICAL ACCIDENTS
Among those mentioned industrial accidents, the most dangerous is the electrical accidents. Most dangerous in the sense that it sound no warning unlike others which in one way or the other gives you warning.

CAUSES OF NON-MECHANICAL ACCIDENTS

CAUSES OF NON-MECHANICAL ACCIDENTS

1) Working bare-footed in workshop

2) Spilling of oil on the workshop’s floor

3) Indiscriminate disposal of chips on the workshop floor

4) Use of bench tools without their handles

5) Using an incorrect spanner to a particular job

6) Lifting heavy loads with hand.

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST NON-MECHANICAL ACCIDENTS

It has been observed that this type of accident can be avoided if the persons concerned obey the rules on workshop safety.

1) Wear safety boot when working in the workshop.

2) There should be no spilling of oil on the workshop floor.

3) All works should be done by using correct tools.

4) Only allowable loads should be lifted with hands and when doing so, the back should be erect.

MECHANICAL ACCIDENTS

An accident is said to be mechanical if it is caused by rotating machines or sliding parts of a machine.

CAUSES OF MECHANICAL ACCIDENTS

1) Unguarded rotating parts of a machine.

2) Using lifting machines such as crane, folk lift for loads beyond their capacity.

3) Sliding or reciprocating parts of machine e.g. shaping machines, power pressers drifting belts.

PRECAUTIONS AGAINST MECHANICAL ACCIDENTS

1) All rotating parts of machines should be guarded e.g. milling cutters and drivers.

2) No attempt should be made to remove chips with hands while the machine is rotating or has stopped. They can be removed by using a piece of metal or brush when the machine has stopped.

3) Suitable safety goggles should be worn when performing grinding operations.

4) All lifting machines e.g. folk lifters should be marked with their load capacities

5) No attempt should be made whatsoever to engage in conversation with somebody working with the machine.

6) Devices such as interlocks should be provided where by the machine should not be started when the guard is not in its position.

7) Stamping machines and pressers should be constructed in such a way that two hands are required for operating as they may be caught by revolving parts of the machine.

8) If necktie is used, it should be tucked in well and severally pinned.

9) No attempt should be made to stop the machine with hand.

10) The hair and ear should be well protected.

11) All drilling jobs should be well cleaned on the machine vices with appropriate machine vices and bolts.

12) Gang-ways should always be removed before starting the machine.

13) Chuck-keys such as those used on the lathe and milling machines should always be removed before starting the machine.

14) Before starting a machine, allow to check whether the machine is in order.

15) Machines and workshops should be cleaned after working.
